When I was a little girl I watched the stage as worlds came together and apart. The words of Stein were the first words of the theater I heard, and her words have both haunted and enlivened me as the theater I knew growing up has died and stayed alive . Although it is true that I first came to know Stein through the work of my father, it is the words of Stein that have inspired tremendous action in my life. It seems that no matter where I am, the action of Stein, the force of her passion, continues to affect my life.
It is Stein's life-force that made me very interested in what other artists are doing to place this passion on stage. I asked my collegues developing this site if I might work to develop a place where artists in the theater could both present and utilize content about Stein. It is our belief that this theater section is not an exersice in posturing, nor the personal testamonies of artists. It is a place where the community of Stein lovers working in the theater can develop dramaturgical content for an enourmous audience around the world, announce special events and productions, and share new ideas. We hope the site can act a as place of international networking, where emails abound and new creative partnerships can be developed. All are welcome here, professionals, students, or anyone making plays about or by Stein.
Why does Stein resonate onstage? Why is she relevant today? What does she mean to todays audience? When did she first effect you? How are you, and your craft, different having created Stein works? What does she bring out in you? How does the space change, or how do you work with space, within the texts of Stein?
These are just a few of the questions we would love for you to ponder and respond to in this section. Please contact us with any and all thougths.
